Hard Drive Rack

I don't have many pictures of the HDD rack as most were on one of the CDs of images I lost while moving house recently. The rack is a simple affair, and doesn't need much explanation.

The hard-drives are a pair of [Western Digital] WD740's (74 Gig Raptors). They were mounted on the bottom of the case with a pair of aluminium brackets. One side is held in with thumbscrews, and the other with headless screws; the drives can be removed by undoing the thumbscrews, tilting the side up, and pulling them out.

The left-hand bracket has a series of openings in it that conform to the sizes of the plugs coming out of the rear of the switch bay. This allows the plugs and cables to pass under the HDDs, through these openings, and attach to the bay. Getting the drives level to enable marking the holes to mount the rack. I always used an old pair of HDDs I had lying about, whenever I needed dummy drives for fitting parts - I wasn't going to risk damaging my new ones!
